Get the Facts!
Mentor School District is continually striving to communicate relevant, factual information to our community. This page is designed to help clarify or dispel rumors that are circulating in our schools.

If you have a rumor you want addressed, please tell us about it.

The Rumor: I heard that next year, students will receive their Terra Nova test scores from this year. Is this true? Will TEACHERS even be able to see individual students' socores?
The Fact:

That is correct on both counts. The 2007-2008 school year was our first for administering the Terra Nova tests. Students and their teachers will receive the scores from last year's tests when they return in the fall.

The Rumor: I heard that the renovations at the high school are not going as smoothly as planned and that the school year may not start on time and could be postponed a couple of weeks for all students. Is their any truth behind this?
The Fact:

There is absolutely no truth to this rumor. We have weekly meetings with the contractor to review the project's progress, and everything is on schedule. Even if the project were to be delayed, school will start as scheduled.

The Rumor: My daughter who is going to be a ninth grader at Mentor High this fall, heard that she might have to share a locker. She is concerned as the lockers are already incredibly skinny. Is this true?
The Fact:

This is not true. Every student at the high school will be assigned his or her own locker. We are adding lockers to the school over the summer to make sure there are more than enough to accommodate the additional students.

The Rumor: I was told by students attending the high school, that it is very overcrowded, and hard to move about halls, etc., how is ninth grade going to fit in?
The Fact:

High school enrollment will be approximately 2,900 students with the addition of ninth grade. While more students will be attending the high school next year than ever before, the enrollment is not substantially higher than the school's peak enrollment as a three-year school. In 1974-1975, Mentor High School had 2,804 students in grades 10 through 12. Since then, the school has expanded to include the F-wing and the soon-to-be renovated I-wing, which will accommodate more students than in the 1970s. Also, about 400 students who are enrolled at the high school today leave the building for all or part of the day for programs like career tech and PSEO.

The Rumor: I heard that for the end-of-year scholastic awards (9th grade), students are not notified beforehand if they will receive an award at the ceremony. Every student should come because they may receive an award. Is this true?
The Fact:

All students who will be receiving awards receive an invitation to the awards night at each junior high. They are told in the letter that they are receiving awards, but they do not learn until that evening which awards they are receiving in order to maintain some element of surprise.

Date: 5/1/2008

The Rumor: I heard that for the 08-09 year the high school is banning hoodies and flip-flops. Is this true?
The Fact:

This is not true. There is no plan to ban hoodies or flip-flops at the high school.

Date: 4/30/2008

The Rumor: I heard that all of the drinking fountains are being removed from the high school and that the children are no longer allowed restroom passes during class.
The Fact:

There is no truth to this rumor.

The Rumor: Is it true that next year at the high school there is going to be a staggered start with only sophomores and freshman showing up the first day and then everyone shows up after that?
The Fact:

Yes, next year at Mentor High School, 9th and 10th graders will start school on Tuesday, September 2 and all students will attend on Wednesday, September 3. This will give 9th and 10th graders an opportunity to attend school for a transition day, without the upperclassmen. All staff members will be available to help students as they find their classes, open their lockers, and become acclimated to Mentor High School. The freshmen and sophomores will begin the school day on September 2 in an assembly designed to welcome them to the school. The program will be about 20 minutes. The students will then attend all of their classes where they will learn about each class from the teachers. Among the activities taking place in the classroom will be a review of expectations, reception of books and materials, and an opportunity to begin getting to know their classmates. There will be a little bit of extra time between classes to help students make their way through the building. Staff will be in the halls between classes helping students with their lockers and directions. Extra staff will also be assigned to classrooms to help teachers and students as necessary.

The Rumor: I heard that balance on my child's CardCredit account (for lunch and breakfast) will not be carried over to the next school year. Will we lose that money?
The Fact:

This is not true. Money left in a student's CardCredit account at the end of the year automatically follows the student to the next grade or school (within the district). If a student is graduating, the parent may request a check for the balance of the funds, or have the funds transferred to another student's account. To request a check for unused funds on a graduating senior account, please contact Assistant Treasurer Norm Funk at (440) 205-2596.

Date: 4/25/2008

The Rumor: I heard that that there are talks to change the typical school year from nine months to a set number of days in school and then a set number of days out of school.
The Fact:

There are no plans to restructure the school year at this time.
